Pyrope garnets contain magnesium-aluminum silicate, producing a pure to slightly purplish-red color, while almandines contain iron-aluminum silicate, creating deeper reds with brownish undertones. Pyropes typically display higher transparency and brilliance. Many red garnets are mixtures of both varieties, with the most desirable stones combining pyrope’s brilliance with almandine’s rich color saturation.

Medium-dark, highly saturated “pigeon blood” reds command premium prices. Stones with weak saturation or overly dark appearance that compromises brilliance are worth considerably less. The most valuable red garnets display vivid saturation without appearing brownish, maintaining their rich color under different lighting. Pure red hues command higher prices than those with secondary tones. Exceptional color in larger, flawless stones can increase value exponentially.

Mozambique red garnets, particularly rhodolites, are considered superior due to their exceptional color and clarity. These stones typically display a desirable purplish-red hue with remarkable brilliance. Mozambique deposits produce some of the most valuable rhodolites with excellent transparency and minimal inclusions, even in larger sizes. Their documented conflict-free status further enhances their desirability in today’s ethical luxury marketplace.

While garnets are typically sold untreated, certain enhancements occasionally appear. Heat treatment sometimes improves color in lower-quality stones. Fracture filling may improve clarity in heavily included specimens. To ensure buying natural, untreated stones, purchase only from reputable dealers who provide certificates from recognized gemological laboratories. High-quality red garnets should be sold with documentation specifying “no treatments” or “natural color,” particularly for premium-priced stones.
