Emerald cuts have large open facets with a hall-of-mirrors effect, while other rectangular cuts may incorporate brilliant faceting for more fire. Emerald cuts typically have trimmed corners, while rectangular cuts may have sharp corners. The primary difference lies in light performance—emerald cuts showcase color depth and clarity, while other rectangular cuts may prioritize brilliance and fire.

Step-cut faceting in rectangular garnets produces a different kind of brilliance characterized by broad flashes of light rather than the sparkle of brilliant cuts. These large, flat facets create a “hall of mirrors” effect with dramatic light return. For garnets with exceptional clarity, this faceting style highlights the stone’s transparency and color depth. While step-cuts may have less fire than brilliant cuts, they offer sophisticated elegance with their clean lines and architectural appearance.

Tsavorite and demantoid garnets are particularly well-suited for rectangular cuts due to their high refractive indices and typically excellent clarity. Rhodolite garnets also display beautiful color saturation in this shape. Malaia garnets showcase their unique color complexity wonderfully through rectangular faceting. The key requirement is selecting garnet varieties with superior transparency and minimal inclusions, as rectangular cuts emphasize internal characteristics more than brilliant cuts.

Rectangular cut garnets, especially those with step-cut faceting, demand higher clarity standards than brilliant cuts. VS (very slightly included) clarity is generally considered the minimum for quality specimens, as the large, open facets act as windows into the stone. For investment-grade stones, VVS (very, very slightly included) clarity is preferred. Any inclusions should not be visible to the naked eye. Natural microscopic inclusions that don’t affect transparency are acceptable and confirm the stone’s authentic origin.
