The Graff Pink

Beauty is worth the risk.

The Graff pink is one of the most famous natural pink diamonds in history. Its first owner was Harry Winston, the famous American jeweler. He kept this pink treasure in his private collection for more than 60 years.

One day, Laurence Graff – the diamond collector known as the “king of bling” – got his eyes on this stone. Graff purchased the 24.78 ct diamond for $46 million in 2010. At the time, the Graff pink officially became the world’s most expensive diamond.

Why was everyone so excited about the diamond?

Frankly speaking, the Graff pink was worth every dollar spent on it. The GIA graded this tone as a Type IIa diamond, which meant that the diamond fell in 1-2% of diamonds in terms of purity – and was potentially flawless. What’s more, this stone boasted a fancy intense pink color – a truly exceptional shade, even among rare pink diamonds. These outstanding characteristics combined with the emerald cut turned the stone into a marvel.

Graff decided to make the diamond even more magnificent.

To become perfect, the diamond had to be repolished. Graff Diamonds experts counted its 25 natural flaws and managed to skilfully eliminate the inclusions close to the surface, keeping the stone’s shape and symmetry.

However, getting rid of flaws wasn’t the only Graff’s goal. He also succeeded in increasing the intensity of the color..

After weeks of painstaking work, the 23.88 ct internally flawless fancy vivid pink diamond was born. What a masterpiece!

“The risks involved were enormous. One wrong move and the diamond could shatter, sending fragments of the world’s most valuable pink diamond scattering across the workshop floor.”
