Do brilliant diamonds sparkle the most?

Unfortunately, it is difficult to give a definite answer to this question.

On the one hand, yes, a modern brilliant diamond is the most sparkly and eye-popping choice. Brilliant cut diamond is precisely the type of diamond that by its very nature implies that it maximizes the beauty and brilliance of the diamond. And yes, a round diamond can be the most sparkly and spellbinding.

However, on the other hand, not always in practice such diamonds turn out to be the most brilliant. Why is this so?

In fact, the maximum brilliance of diamonds depends on many factors at once. And if in a brilliant cut diamond, the cut itself  is one of the key factors, it does not mean that it is the only one. For example, the clarity of a diamond will also play a huge role in its brilliance and brightness. Even if you find a brilliant cut diamond but its clarity is, say, I1, it may be inferior in brilliance to other higher clarity cuts. Buying tips

When it comes to buying a brilliant diamond, start with paying attention to a few details, which we will discuss in detail further on.

First of all, know your diamonds to find your perfect one. What we mean here is to keep in mind all four factors that affect the beauty of a diamond. Namely, clarity, carat weight, color and cut.

Look for a diamond with an excellent cut, meaning it’s proportioned and polished to maximize light return. Yes, you will be right if you say that cut is the most crucial factor for sparkle. Nevertheless, don’t neglect other factors. It is also vital to understand color grades especially in white diamonds. Colorless diamonds (D-F) tend to be the most brilliant. However, slightly colored diamonds (G-J) are often a better value and can still be very sparkly.

As we have already mentioned, clarity also can highly influence the brilliance of the diamond. Diamonds with fewer inclusions (internal flaws) and blemishes (external imperfections) will have better brilliance. SI1 clarity is a good compromise for sparkle and affordability.

Carat weight is important, but prioritize cut and clarity over size. A smaller diamond with excellent cut and clarity will sparkle more than a larger one with lower grades. For instance, a carat diamond in a round brilliant cut captivates the eye like no other. Be realistic about your budget and prioritize the most important 4Cs within your financial constraints.

Another piece of advice may seem simple, yet it is extremely important and effective. Seek expertise and purchase only from reputable and trustworthy sources. Work with a trusted jeweler with a good reputation and experience in diamond selection. Ask for a reputable diamond grading report from labs like GIA or AGS. This document will detail the diamond’s 4Cs and give you confidence in its quality. If you doubt your diamond dealer for even a second or don’t like something, run and don’t come back! Buying a diamond is an extremely responsible and exciting event, which should first of all be pleasant, so you should buy only from jewelers whom you trust completely. Don’t forget to read not only reviews on the Internet (which you can buy), but also ask real people offline.. Word of mouth has proven its credibility and reliability long ago.

From the previous advice comes the next. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and keep asking! Don’t hesitate, there are no stupid or wrong questions when it comes to such an expensive purchase. Ask about certificates, color, cut, ask your jewelry dealer’s opinion, but don’t rely on it completely. Do not forget your own opinion, your feelings and intuition. By the way, don’t settle for the first one you see. Compare multiple diamonds side-by-side to evaluate their sparkle, color, and clarity. Make sure you’re comfortable with the jeweler’s return policy in case you’re not satisfied with your purchase.

Finally, don’t forget your style. Consider different shapes and don’t get hung up on one thing. Always keep in mind that there are more shapes beyond a round diamond.

Don’t be afraid to experiment. Sometimes a shape that seems inappropriate to you will look much more interesting in the right setting than the other options (remember our example with cufflinks). Moreover, the setting can significantly influence a diamond’s sparkle. Consider a setting that enhances the diamond’s brilliance (for instance, white gold or yellow gold both look fabulous all the time with all diamond shapes).

Buying a diamond is a significant investment and a special experience.  Take your time, explore options, and select a diamond that you truly love and that embodies your vision.
